Weddings, shot and run

Lorraine photographs the day and keeps it to time, so the pictures happen on their own. York, Yorkshire and the North; further by arrangement.

How a wedding day goes

A typical timetable, written with you a month before and kept on the day. Yours will differ; the point is that it exists.

  1. Getting readyLorraine arrives with the second camera. Details, the dress, the room, the quiet.
  2. Guests arriveThe venue is briefed, the florist and the car are checked, the groom is found.
  3. CeremonyShot from the aisle and the side, without flash, without moving the celebrant.
  4. Confetti and drinksThe one picture everyone asks for, then an hour of people enjoying themselves.
  5. GroupsEight groups in twenty minutes, from a list agreed the week before. Nobody is herded.
  6. The two of youTwenty minutes away from everyone, in the best light the place has.
  7. Wedding breakfast and speechesFaces at the tables, the speeches from three angles, the cake.
  8. Golden hourTen minutes outside, timed to the light, if you want it. Most do.
  9. First dance and the eveningThe dance, the band, the people who stay. Lorraine leaves at 22:00 or when it is right.

In York, with the light

Lorraine has photographed in York for long enough to know which wall is lit at four and which street is empty at seven.

The city is small enough to walk and old enough to give every session a different century: the walls, the Shambles, the Minster's pale stone, the river, the Georgian doors of Bootham, a daylight studio off Micklegate. Weddings go further: barns in the Dales, halls on the Wolds, the coast.

She works alone or with a second photographer, on digital and on film, and directs quietly. Models leave with a portfolio; couples leave with a day they can remember in order.

Before you book

  • Based in York, YO1. Sessions in the city; weddings within two hours, further by arrangement.
  • Sessions delivered within ten days, weddings within six weeks, a preview in the first.
  • A date is held by a short agreement and a deposit.
Do I need to have modelled before?

No. A test shoot is where a portfolio starts. Lorraine directs every frame, from how to stand to where to look, and you keep the pictures to send to agencies and use on your own pages.

Can I bring someone?

Yes, one person, and they are welcome to help with bags and hair. Under-18s always bring a parent or guardian.

What should I wear?

Two or three outfits you already like, in plain colours, nothing with big logos. Lorraine sends a short note the week before with what works in the places you will be shooting.

What does managing a wedding mean?

Lorraine plans the day's timings with you a month before, briefs the venue and suppliers on the morning, and keeps everything to time, so the pictures happen without anyone being herded. It is included in every collection.

Do you photograph weddings outside Yorkshire?

Yes. Anywhere within two hours of York is at the collection price; beyond that, travel and a night's stay are added at cost.

How do we hold a date?

Send the date through the form. If it is free, a short agreement and a deposit of £150 for a session or 25% for a wedding holds it. The balance is due two weeks before.

What if it rains?

York is good in rain. Sessions move under the snickelways and arcades or into the studio, or to another day at no charge. A wedding is photographed as it happens, umbrellas and all.

Do you shoot film?

A roll or two on most sessions and every wedding, alongside digital. Film pictures are included; whole-session film is quoted separately.
